DR. RAMON ARAVENA, Research Professor,
Earth Sciences, University of Waterloo, Canada

Dr. Ramon AravenaDr. Aravena is a Research Professor in the Department of Earth Sciences, University of Waterloo with 20 years experience in the application of isotope techniques in hydrology. He has been involved in numerous groundwater studies in Latin America, Canada, the U.S and Europe, related to evaluation of groundwater resources and groundwater contamination.

His current research focus on groundwater contamination caused by agricultural, industrial and urban activities using environmental isotopes as tracers to provide information about sources and processes that affect nitrate and organic compounds in groundwater.

Dr. Aravena is a member of the University Consortium for Field-Focused Groundwater Contamination Research, which deal with contaminants studies in groundwater.

His teaching involves Isotope Hydrology and Geochemistry courses in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University of Waterloo and courses on Isotope Hydrology in Latin America organized by the International Atomic Energy Agency, in European Universities and in the NGWA professional course program.

Dr. Aravena holds a Ph. D. degree from the University of Waterloo in Earth Sciences. He worked for 10 years for the Atomic Energy Commission of Chile. Dr. Aravena has been consulting for 19 years as part of the expert pool of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Vienna, Austria, for their projects worldwide. He is the author and co-author of over 100 referee publications and over 50 technical papers. He serves as a reviewer for several journals including Environmental Science & Technology, Water Resources Research, Ground Water, Journal of Hydrology, Journal of Contaminant Hydrology and Geochimica Cosmochimica.
